Don’t beat the system; opt out

“If you want to get something done, you give it to a busy mom.”

That was the answer that Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary got when he asked a female CEO why women ran the only profitable companies in his investment portfolio.

If you haven’t seen Shark Tank, it’s worth watching. It’s a reality show where hopeful entrepreneurs “present their ideas to the sharks in the tank—five titans of industry who made their own dreams a reality and turned their ideas into lucrative empires.” The goal is to get one of the sharks to invest in your idea.

Women CEO’s = success

According to O’Leary, a successful Canadian entrepreneur who is one of the sharks on the show, his only profitable companies range across multiple sectors, from food to biotech. Yet, they all have something in common—women run them all, and they’re all outperforming companies run by men.

O’Leary tells Business Insider, "I just looked at deals. I never looked at gender. I have no bias. I want to make money. I'm trying to find the path of least resistance with the best people I can find. I'm agnostic to where they came from."

A tough road for women in business?

But if you’re a woman entrepreneur, you know that this isn’t the typical view. There is no shortage of articles out there lamenting the role of women in the business world. If you’re not careful, you could get depressed just from reading the headlines!

Whether it’s struggles with getting funding from the good ol’ boys venture capital club or climbing the corporate ladder only to hit the proverbial glass ceiling, the prevailing media story is that women continually have to fight to beat the system.

And let’s be clear, the system does exist. Even O’Leary’s parting words betray this.

"One thing's for sure: We should be elevating women to the CEO position because we're getting better returns," he said. "You don't need another reason in business. In my case, the numbers speak for themselves."

Elevate yourself

The question is, “Who is this ‘we’ he speaks of, and why do they have to elevate women?”

Thankfully, there is another option to beating the system. Simply opt out.
